Though it was almost inevitable of Rahul Gandhi’s ascension to the Congress party’s president from the Vice-President’s post, there were few doubts that some party members would oppose the decision.
After the Delhi unit of the AICC passed a resolution requesting vice president Rahul to take over as party president on 7th October this year, he was expected to take over the reigns from his mother Sonia Gandhi after Diwali.
To clear all the doubts, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand Congress Committees on Thursday unanimously passed a resolution to appoint Rahul Gandhi as All India Congress Committee (AICC) President. A few days ago, a working committee of the Maharashtra and Haryana Congress unanimously passed a proposal to make Rahul the party president.
On October 10, Rajasthan and Jammu and Kashmir state units of the Congress passed separate resolutions requesting Rahul Gandhi to take over as the party president. “The Congress party is strengthening the voice of people as a strong opposition against the BJP government under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi. Party workers want Rahul Gandhi to be the party president, therefore we in Rajasthan today passed a resolution for this,” state Congress president Sachin Pilot was reported saying.
